Innovation is a game about building a civilization through technologies, ideas, and ingenuity. You choose the innovations that will determine your people's fate throughout history—from the humble beginnings of technologies like the wheel and clothing, through gunpowder, democracy, and combustion, to satellites, the internet, and even speculative ideas like hypersonics and solar sails. Each of these innovations grants your civilization a special ability. Some innovations allow you to advance through the ages more quickly, others help build your infrastructure, and still others allow you to attack your rivals.

Each innovation is represented by a card in the game and is unique. There are no cards or tokens, as the cards control all action and scoring in the game. Cards primarily serve as innovations and are played face up in front of you to achieve an effect. They can also be placed face down in your score or achievement piles, representing the power, influence, and legacy of your civilization.
