Publisher's game description:
At midnight, the bell tolls in the streets of Wildegrens as the villagers close their shutters against the darkness. Something moves through the night—in the woods, across the fields, over the old battlefield. The isolated village is in danger. Crops fail, animals die, and villagers disappear. The villagers are afraid. Some of the women resist, but the villagers suspect these women are in league with the devil himself. Behind the old school, a shadow flits toward the village well. A faint light reveals two witches who nod to each other, close their lantern, and set off into the dark woods.
Witchcraft! is a fast-paced, card-driven solitaire game where you lead a coven of witches in a fantasy world where magic is real—as are the monsters. Building on the Resist! mechanism of playing cards face down or revealing them, you decide when to use magic to overcome the challenges you face—and risk revealing yourself to the villagers and being imprisoned for witchcraft. As you complete missions and defeat enemies, you'll try to prove to the villagers that magic isn't evil and convince a jury that you're protecting the village. Three jurors will decide your fate, and their conviction is strong. Can you persuade them? Or will evil overwhelm you and the village?
At the start of the game, you assemble a coven of witches, represented by a deck of cards. Selecting multiple witches from the same family makes that family more powerful. Each family focuses on different tasks within the game—uncovering challenges, increasing attack power, revealing the jury's conviction, or capturing familiars to aid you in battle. The combat is real, and each of the eight jurors faces a different villain. Is it the Headless Horseman, Baba Yaga, the Scarecrow, or some other fiend?
At the start, you choose three jurors, their missions, and their unique challenges – resulting in 56 possible combinations with a wide variety of challenges and monsters you'll face. If you fail two missions or lose five villagers, you lose the game. Even if you complete the missions, you still have to go through the trial, and you can't be sure of your fate until you reveal the jurors' verdict and see if you've done enough to convince them.
